Copyright
Research into copyright laws if effective as it gives us a better understanding of why copyright is used in the music industry. This research will assist me when it comes to creating my music video as I will have to apply for permission to used my chosen song choice.
Copyright law is a legal concept that had been created by the government in order to give the creator of the original work piece automatic exclusive rights. Copyright protects aspects of media such as written, theatrical, musical, film, books, sound recordings, broadcasts etc. However this usually is only for a period of time. Copyright law prevents anyone from potentially copying their work without consent from the person who originally created the work. It also stops them from claiming any financial profits from the product.
Before creating our music video we had to get copyright permission to use the song. This is so it is legal for us to use the song 'impossible' by James Arthur and that it is for educational purposes. A member of my group emailed the record label Syco asking for the permission to use the song 'impossible' by James Arthur in our music video. We sent a email to syco.prod@gmail.com as shown in the image below on the 27th of September 2013.
Copyright must be applied whenever you copy the existing work. For example copyright must be applied when it comes to creating a music video to an existing song. It states that the artists name must be shown in order to prevent anyone taking credit for the artists work. It also may have positive or negative impacts of the record label and so they must be notified before making the video.
As of yet we still have not received a response from the record label however we will continue to email them throughout the process. This is to ensure that we did our best to get permission to create this music video and that we don't break any laws from doing so.
You have made a start in describing why copyright is important, but further points are needed, by considering music video censorship is more detail.
