Risk assessment

Risk Assessment

Risk assessment is important when creating a music video as it identifies issues that may go wrong when film. By creating a risk assessment table as shown below it highlights what are the possible dangers and enables us to consider it whilst filming minimizing any injuries. As a group we discussed how we could prevent these issues from happening before filming our music video.

Planning Cinematography

Planning Cinematography

What is the purpose of cinematography?
The purpose of the cinematography reflects the narrative of the music video in which it provides the audience with a better understanding of the song. Different camera shots are used throughout the music video providing the audience with different perspectives. Within music videos different camera shots are used to connote different meanings. For example a high angle would be used to show the vulnerability of the artist or character. Positioning of the artist within the cinematography is also important as it is conventional to see the artist positioned above other people within the camera shot. This is because it connotes their status and like Dyers star theory, makes them appear extraordinary for the consumer.

What cinematography will you include and why?
Within our music video we are going to use different cinematography. Throughout the performance element of our music video, we are mainly going to use close ups and mid shots. This is because it positions the artist in the center of the frame in order to introduce the artist to the audience. This also connotes the artists importance and focuses their attention on only the artist rather than on the background. It is also effective for the target audience as they are able to see the artists facial expressions when singing the lyrics and allow them to relate to the emotions of the artist. Therefore this enables the audience to build up a relationship with the artist as they get a better understanding of the song.

Another camera shot that is going to be used throughout the performance of the music video is a long shot.We decided to do this as it will show the artist playing the guitar reflecting the artists talent. This will further promote the artist attracting the audience. This camera shot will show mise-en-scene elements such as location and costume. This is important as the locations we decided to use in the video have significance. One performance location is on the white cliffs of Dover which connotes the artist being alone and isolated. The artist is going to be seen in casual clothing which will be seen in the long shot. This is so it conforms to Dyers star theory showing that the artist is 'ordinary' however 'extraordinary' for the consumer. The artist is going to appear extraordinary as he will wear known labelled items of clothing. An example of this is when the artist is wearing a Super dry jacket. Therefore it portrays the artist as fashionable in which the target audience will look up to.

However within the narrative element in the music video, we are going to use various camera shots that creates a continuous flow throughout the video. This is crucial as the purpose of the narrative is to give the target audience a better understanding of the song. One camera shot we are going to use in particular is a a close up. This is going to be used in different scenes to highlight to the audience different connotations to the iconography we have chosen to use. For example at the beginning of the video a close up camera shot is going to be used to show the female looking through a photo box in which she finds a photograph of her and her ex boyfriend. She then goes on to rip the photo in half connoting the characters feelings of anger and sadness. This is effective as the audience empathize with the character enabling them to build up a relationship. It also gives them a more depth understanding to what the song is about. This is going to be used again later on in the music video when there is a flashback of the male and female playing cards. A close up camera shot is going to be used to show the king and queen of hearts. Each of the cards symbolize the male and female characters and connotes to the audience that the female 'played him' and she won as she cheated on him and they are no longer together. Therefore the narrative helps the audience get a better understanding to what the song is about and are able to relate to the characters.

How is your cinematography conventional to your music genre
The cinematography used in the music video is conventional to the pop music genre as close up are often used when the artist is seen to be performing. This is because it is effective in introducing the artist to the target audience and allowing them to build up a relationship with the artist through their facial expressions. Therefore our music video conforms to the stereotypical conventions of a pop music video. Long shots are also conventional to see in this particular music genre as it gives the audience a better understanding of the narrative through mise-en-scene elements. The artist is further promoted through their costume which portrays their personality and a long shot helps do this. Different locations are conventional to see within a pop music video. For example a isolated location connotes the feelings on loneliness and a long shot shows this.

How does it build a relationship with your target audience?
The cinematography within the music video creates a continuous flow throughout the narrative. This effective as it gives the audience a better understanding to what the song is about and allowing them to empathize for the characters. The close up camera shots also highlight the persons facial expressions and therefore they are able to see the artists emotions of the lyrics. This therefore enables the target audience to build a relationship with the artist as they can relate. Cinematography reveals the costumes of the artist, identifying the artists genre and portraying the personality of the artist. It is conventional for the artist to be seen in casual clothings so they appear 'ordinary' for the consumer and therefore making them seem down to earth and approachable. This encourages the audience to build a relationship with the artist as they view them as a role model and look up to them.

Planning editing styles

Planning editing styles

Why is editing important with in a music video?
Editing is important within a music video as it creates a continuous flow throughout the video. Placing camera shots in a certain order in the music video shows the style of music video: Performance, narrative or concept based. This is effective as through displaying the narrative, the audience a better understanding of what the song is about and the hidden meanings within the video. If performance based is used within a music video it enables the audience to build a relationship with the artist through various camera shots such a close ups. If the music video is narrative based, the audience are able to relate to the characters involved and therefore are able to empathize with them. Different genres tend to used different styles of editing. For example if the song choice belongs to the Dance music genre, it is conventional to use fast pace editing to match the rhythm of the music. If the song belongs to a indie genre, it is conventional to use slow pace editing with is because the pace of the song is usually slower and requires a slow paced narrative to further explain the meaning of the song.

What editing styles are you planning on including and why?
At the beginning of the music video, we are going to use slow pace editing to introduce the artist to the audience. Various camera shots will introduce the simplistic location (a dark room) to the audience focusing all their attention on the artist. This is effect as through multiple camera shots such as mid shots and close ups the audience will be able to build up a relationship through his facial expressions. Slow pace editing will be seen in the beginning as it matches the beat of the song creating a smooth continuous flow.

However, further throughout the pace of the song increases. Therefore the camera shots will change parallel to the beat of the song. Fast pace editing will be shown when the narrative of male and female are arguing in the car. This is effective as it will highlight to the audience the building tension between the two characters and how the relationship is falling apart. This will keep the audience engaged and encourage them to keep watching the video. We decided to show a change the pace of editing throughout the video as we felt it would be a effective technique to show a contrast between the positive and negative.

Editing techniques are going to be used at the beginning of the music video when the female is seen to be ripping a photograph of her and the male character. However it will be shown to rewinding appearing as if she is putting the photograph back together. This is going to follow with happy flashback of when the couple were happy. At the end of the video we are going to use the same camera shot however show the female ripping the photograph implying that they are no longer together and that it was 'Impossible' to stay together.

How are your editing styles conventional to your music genre?
The editing styles used within our music video conforms to the conventions of the pop music genre as it creates a continuous flow through out the video. It is a generic convention to use slow pace editing within a pop music video as it enable the video to display the narrative of the song. Therefore like Goodwin suggested, the link between the lyrics and visuals give the audience a better understanding of the meaning of the song. It is also conventional to connote the underlying tension between the characters within the narrative through the editing. By increasing the pace of the editing which is parallel to the beat of the song, the audience are able to empathize with the characters and relate to the instability of their relationship. Other pop artists such as Demi Lovato use this technique in her music video 'Give your heart a break'.

How will your editing help to build a relationship with your target audience?
Throughout the performance element of the music video slow pace editing is going to be used. This is helpful in enabling the audience to build up a relationship with the target audience as through camera shots such as mid shots and close ups the audience are able to see the artists facial expressions. Therefore they are able to see the emotions of the artist therefore allowing them to empathize with him. These camera shots are also effective in drawing the audiences attention only on the artist as there is nothing to distract their focus. This also applies to the narrative as by having a continuous flow throughout the audience get an insight into their relationship and how the females betrayal destroyed the relationship.

Lyric Analysis

Lyric Analysis

In order for the audience to get a better understanding of the song, we decided to make our music video conform to Goodwin's theory by showing a relationship between the lyrics and the visuals. Below is a image showing the work we created as a group during class highlighting where the different scenes will take place within our music video. This is effective as it helped us decided what scene we could do that correlated with the lyrics engaging the audience.

The first narrative scene we are going to show is the scene where the female is going through a box of photos of her and her ex boyfriend. This will be shown when the artist sings 'Someone told me I should take' to imply the character retrospectively looking back on the memories of the relationship. This is also effective as it introduces the characters to the audience allowing them to build up a relationship with them. This further enables the audience to relate to their role within the narrative and get a better understanding of the song.

When the lyrics say 'You have won' the narrative will show the female and male couple playing a game of cards. This is effective as it connotes that they 'played' each other and that the won as they are not longer together. Through various camera shots such as close ups and mid shots, certain playing cards are going to be used to symbolize the characters. For example the male will lay a Queen of hearts whereas the female will lay and King of hearts. This represents the characters as a couple whilst reflecting on the fact that they work against each other to win.
We are going to show further evidence of a relationship between the lyrics and visuals as when the lyrics say 'And my heart is broken' the narrative is going to show the female finding her old heart shaped necklace in the box. This will then follow with a flashback informing the audience that it was a gift from her ex boyfriend in which he is shown placing the necklace on her. This will therefore highlight the significance of the iconography whilst emphasizing the feelings of loss and hurt.

'falling out of love is hard' is going to be played parallel to a happy narrative scene. As a group we decided we could show the couple messing around and having fun in a shop. Through the use of iconography such as a trolley we are going to show the male pushing the female around laughing. This is effective as it shows the audience that they were happy once and loved each other. This will form a contrast to the later narrative where the couple will be shown to fall out of love with each other. Numerous happy narrative scenes are going to be shown throughout the video, one of them being the couple in a photo booth. The male and female will be scene wearing silly iconography items such as big glasses or a hat. This will further promote the personalities of the character portraying them to be fun and happy. This enables the audience to relate to the characters and see the contrast in the relationship to when they were happy and how they grew to dislike each other.

When the lyrics say 'All we had is gone now' a narrative scene will be used to show the couple arguing. The characters will be seen sitting in a car in which they begin to argue and the female storms out the car. The lyrics enable the audience to understand that the relationship has come to an end and that there is nothing left to save. The lyrics 'Impossible' are going to be played continuously through both the narrative and performance to reflect on the idea that it is impossible to love someone who betrays you. The narrative to our music video will suggest the female betrayed her boyfriend by cheating on him even though it will not be clearly shown within the narrative. We decided to do this as we felt it would be effective in showing the tension between the characters and keeping the audience engaged by guessing throughout the video.

A further narrative scene will be shown where the cards are built into a tower in which they are set of fire and crumble into piece. This is going to be shown when the lyrics say 'Empty promises will wear' symbolizing that the relationship has fallen apart. The connotations of the fire will highlight the artist's feelings of anger and pain caused from the relationship allowing the audience to sympathize with him.

Through completing a lyric analysis it has given me a better understanding of the variety of scene we want to film for the music video and what camera shots will be needed to make it seem effective. It also helped us as a group to get a better idea of where we would like the different scenes to be placed throughout. Through showing a relationship between the lyrics and the narrative, I feel as though the audience will be able to relate to the emotions felt by the characters and get a more depth understanding of meaning of the song.

Planning artist image

Planning artist image

Why is an artist's image important within a music video?
An artist's image is one of the most important elements of a music video. Not only does it help identify the genre of music the artist creates, but it portrays their values in which they are seen to be role models for their target audience. Dyer's star theory also suggests that the star must be simultaneously ordinary so that they are relatable, yet extraordinary for the consumer. This is something that we considered when discussing our artists image. However, some artist's portray a diverse image in order to stand out from other artists of the same genre. A diverse image may promote certain ideologies. An example of this is Rihanna, she wears diverse, wacky outfits which in turn starts a fashion trend and her fan imitate similar clothing. Also different colours are used to connote different meanings for example, the colour red would be worn in order to symbolize love or evil etc. The colour white connotes the idea of innocence or even vulnerability.

How is you artist going to be represented in your music video? costume hair etc
In order for the target audience to be able to build a relationship with are artist, they need to be able to relate to them. Therefore we decided as a group that the artist will be represented as an ordinary person. Through mise-en-scene elements such as costume the artist will appear to dress like an 'ordinary' person through their casual clothing. This is also a convention of a pop music video, therefore the music video will be following stereotypical genre conventions. The artist will be seen wearing outfits such as jeans, checked shirt and converse. The male target audience will therefore be able to relate to the artist as this is something that they would wear themselves. Throughout the performance within the music video the artist will be seen wearing various designer items of clothing. For example when the artist is seen to be singing at Dover, he is wearing a Superdry jacket. This connotes the artists status to the audience and showing that he is fashionable and follows the stereotypical trends.

How is the image conventional to your music genre?
The image is conventional to the music genre as pop artists are often shown to look like ordinary people in order to allow the audience to relate to them. Our music video also conforms to Richard Dyers Star theory as the artist is presented ordinary however extraordinary for the consumer through the use of designer items of clothing. It symbolizes that the artist is wealthy and sets a fashion trend in which the target audience then goes on to imitate.

What effect does this have with creating a relationship with your target audience?
The artist image is effective in allowing the target audience to build up a relationship with the artist as they are able to relate to him. By making the artist look ordinary through the use of casual clothing, the artist is not presented superior to the audience in anyway are are seen as the 'person next door'. The target audience therefore positively respond to the artists down to earth approachable nature as they feel they are able to relate and understand where they are coming from. Diverse artists prevent the audience from building up a relationship with them as they are unable to relate to the narrative and cannot empathize with them.

Research into chosen artist

Research into chosen artist

As a group we decided to create a music video using a recently established artist James Arthur. He is a upcoming artist who is the winner to one of the most watched talent shows, theX factor. James Arthur is a artist that we all like as a group and is a pop artist; this is the genre of music that we decided wanted to create a music video for as we all listen to the music genre. Due to winning the X factor, he released a winning single 'Impossible' which is going to be the song choice for our music video.

James Arthur was born on the 2nd of March in 1988. He is a British singer who won the ninth series of one of the most watched talents shows The X Factor. Following his victory, James Arther was signed to Simon Cowell's record label 'Syco' in which he then went on to release his debut single 'Impossible'. This reached number one in the UK singles Charts within the first week of release. The song also peaked at number one in Ireland, two in Australia, New Zealand and Switzerland, and eight in Slovakia. Overall he sold 2.5 million copies of this single making him the second best selling The X Factor's winning single of all time. He then went on to release his album which featured another one of his singles 'Your nobody 'til somebody loves you'.

James Arthur - 'Your nobody 'till somebody loves you'

Artist music video analysis
In the music video 'Your nobody 'til somebody loves you' the artist is seen to be represented as an ordinary person. This is done through mise-en-scene elements such as costume. The artist is seen to be wearing a shirt, jeans and some boots. This is effective as the audience view him as an ordinary person and therefore they feel as though they can relate to the artist. However the artist is further represented as extraordinary as he is seen to be positioned above the rest of the community on stage with a band. Therefore this connotes that the artist has a higher status than the rest of the characters in the video making him appear extraordinary for the consumer. Therefore the music video is seen to conform to Dyer's star theory.

Genre characteristics are shown through the style of the music video. The video consists 60% is performance based and 40% is narrative based which is a generic convention of a pop music video. This is evident as the artist is seen to be singing on stage with a band and backing singers. Close ups and mid shots are used throughout the music video enabling the audience to see the artists emotions through his facial expressions; this in turn allows them to build up a relationship with the artist. There is evidence of a narrative as when the artist is seen to start sing on the stage, different members of the community gather around to watch his performance. This further portrays the artists image as a friends, welcoming, community person to the target audience. It also shows that he doesn't perceive himself to be better than them people due to his fame.

There is evidence of Goodwin's theory as there is voyeuristic treatment of the females body. Through the narrative, a number of camera shots are used to show images of female members of the community. Mise-en-scene elements such as costume shows the women to be wearing tight fitted crop tops, or low cut tops. This is effective in attracting a broad audience as not only does the artist have a female fan base, but it attracts a male target audience. There is further evidence of Goodwin's theory as there is evidence of a relationship between the lyrics and visuals. When the artist is seen to be singing 'Stone cold heart' a mid shot is used to show two females standing over a fire. The effect of this is that the audience are able to gain a better understanding of the connotations and hidden meanings of the song.

The target audience of the music video ranges from young teenagers to adults. This is visible as the characters used in the music video vary from this age group. Therefore the same aged target audience are more likely to relate to the people in the video and the narrative. The artist is seen to be wearing black which is not a gender specific colour, therefore it suggests that the target audience is broad in terms it attracts both males and females.

Common camera shots used through out the music video is long shots. This is effective as it highlights the positioning of the artist. When the artist is seen to be performing he is seen to be standing in the centre of the stage. This is effective as it allows the audience to focus of the artist and connotes his status. A tracking shot was also used at the beginning of the music video that contributed to this. The artist was seen to be walking down the street towards the stage. Slow pace editing was used to focus the audiences attention on the artist and highlight his presence through the neighborhood.

The research into my chosen artist I conducted will assist me with planning my own music video as it is evident that the artists music videos conforms to the stereotypical conventions of a pop music video. Therefore this is something that I will  consider when I plan my music video. I have also gained a better understanding of the artists image and how he is represented as a ordinary person. This is also something that I would like to use when creating the music video as it is effective in allowing the target audience to relate to the artist.

Planning lighting and colour

Planning lighting and colour

Why is lighting and colour important within a music video?
Lighting is important within a music video as it connotes the different moods and atmosphere of the song. Like Goodwin's theory suggested,  music videos should display a correlation between the music and the visuals. If the song is positive, upbeat and the lyrics are portraying the artist to be happy then it is conventional for high- key lighting to be used. This is because it creates a feel good atmosphere for the audience, which coincides with the beat and lyrics of the song. However if the song is slow and has negative connotations then low key lighting is used to symbolize the artist emotions. This therefore creates a dull atmosphere the is parallel to the music. One artist that conforms to this is Bruno Mars. He used low-key lighting to connote his emotions of sadness.

Colour is also important with in a music video as different colours display various connotations of the characters and implies hidden meanings. For example female are often shown to be wearing colours of red in order to connote promiscuity, passion, danger etc or even display values such as rebellion. One artist in particular that uses this is Miley Cyrus. Miley Cyrus is often seen to be wearing bright red lipstick to coincide with her rebellious, sexualised image.

What styles of lighting will you include and why? What effect does it create?
At the beginning of the music video, we are going to use low key lighting to establish the artist. Various camera shots will be used to show the artist sitting in a simplistic dark room under a spotlight. We decided that it would be more effective to use low-key lighting as it enables the audience to focus of the artist rather than the location and therefore see the artists talent. This would immediately show the artists image representing him as an ordinary person through his clothing enabling the audience to feel as though they are able to relate to the artist. However, through long shots the audience will be able to see the artist playing the guitar; this conforms to Dyer's star theory as the audience will therefore see that he is extraordinary. Through close ups and mid shots the audience are therefore able to build up a relationship with the artist through his facial expressions.

However, in the white cliffs of Dover scene we are going to use high-key lighting. The reasoning for this is because we are going to show flashbacks of the couple when they were together. The lighting will therefore connote that the couple were happy which is a convention to a pop music video. This scene will also consist of the artist performing where naturalistic lighting will be used. This is so that it connotes that the artists is reminiscing over the memories he once had at that location.

Another scene that is going to be used in the music video is where a tower of cards is going to be set on fire. This will be done in a dark room which will be effective in creating a contrast between the fire. The connotations to the low-key lighting will show the emotions of the artist. The fire is symbolic for the pain and hurt felt between the characters and that their relationship has fallen apart.

What colours will you include and why? effect?
Different colour are used as they all have different connotations and hidden meanings. In our music video the female will be seen to wear elements of black. This is effective as it forebodes that she is the reason to why the relationship will as the narrative reveals that she cheated on him. When the couple are shown to be in a flash back that is in an indoor setting, the female will be wearing an element of red. This will highlight to the audience the connotations of love and passion, as the couple are happy, however it will also symbolize danger or even anger. This is conventional in a music video as the characters other than the artist are often portray to be the 'bad guy'. This is because the artist is represented as the role model as Dyer suggested, and therefore the audience are able to relate to what the artist is shown to go through.

The artist however is going to be seen wearing elements of white. This will connote to the audience the artist innocence. This is also effective as it is not a gender specific colour. Therefore when attracting the target audience it doesn't limit it to a certain gender. This is conventional to see in a music video as the artist wanted to get the largest target audience as possible in order to increase their popularity.

How does it help to build a relationship with your target audience?
The target audience are therefore able to build up a relationship with the artist as they are able to relate to the emotions shown through various colours.  The colours used all have hidden connotations and therefore they are able to get a better understanding of the characters and the narrative making the music video seem to be realistic.

Planning setting & iconography

Planning setting and iconography

What is the purpose of settings and iconography?
The purpose of settings and iconography in a music video is that is conveys the style of the video and helps portray different meanings/connotations to the lyrics. These mise-en-scene elements are massively effective in helping the audience get a better understanding of the message of the song as it gives them some context. It also helps identify the genre of the song and artist in which the settings and iconography either conforms or subverts.

Settings are a significant feature in a music video as it gives the audience firstly some context, and secondly could help show the relationships between the characters.Like Goodwin's theory suggests, most music videos will display a relationships between the lyrics and the visuals. Therefore certain locations connote the emotions felt by the artist which is portrayed to the audience. For example locations such as a beach is a conventional location that is used to show a young couple spending time with each other. This highlights to the audience the significance of the location and it could show the artist emotions of being happy or in love. Settings are also important as the audience want to be able to relate to the narrative, therefore realism is created through the choice of conventional locations in the music video.

Iconography is significant in music videos as it is used to connote certain representations. In some music videos, iconography is used to establish the artists image and the genre on their music. It also can be used to show whether the artist conforms or subverts the genre of their music and gives the audience a better understanding of the narrative. One example of a pop artist who is diverse is Lady Gaga. Through the use of iconography, she used coke cans as rollers for her hair following the narrative that she is in prison. This is unusual and subverts generic pop conventions and therefore the audience can see how she differs from other pop artists.

What settings will you include and why?
The of the most significant setting that we decided to use in our music video is the white cliffs of Dover. We chose this location to show elements of both performance and narrative based. The artist of our music video will be show to perform on the cliffs of Dover in which a flash back will be used to show some narrative. This will represent the significance of the location as it will show the the artist the female at the same location when they were happy. The connotations of the white cliffs will be used to symbolize the couple when they were in love, which will show a contrast to the present day which the artist is shown to reminisce over the fond memories the couple once had.

Another location that is going to be used in our music video is a simplistic dark room. This is going to be used to establish the artist at the beginning of the song. Mise-en-scene elements such as low key lighting is going to be used to focus the audience attention on the artist making him the main focal point. The effects of the room being simplistic means that the audience are able to reflect on the artists talent and through close up camera shots, the audience will in turn build up a relationship with the artist.

A further location that will feature in our music video is a bedroom. This will be used to show the context of the music video through some narrative. The artist and female will be shown in a flashback happy playing cards in the bedroom. This location is significant as it shows the positive close relationship between the characters, whilst showing the contrast between couple when they were happy in the past. The use of the bedroom will also be effective as it will show voyeuristic treatment of the females body, therefore conforming to Goodwin's theory. This is going to be shown through close up camera shots of the female that will feature in the music video.

What iconography will you include and why?
The most prominent elements of iconography that is going to be used in the music video is cards. This is going to be shown when the couple are in the bedroom playing a game of cards. Different cards such as the king and queen are representations of the male and female characters in the music video.  The cards are shown to be symbolic of the relationship. The female plays the artist by cheating on him as if the relationship is a game. Further along the video the cards are going to be set on fire, symbolizing the relationship falling apart and how the love has burned out. This is significant as it shows connotations of the artists emotions. IT portrays the pain and hurt felt from the relationship allowing the audience to relate to the narrative.

A Further piece of iconography that will be used in the music video is the artists guitar. This is effective as it is a generic convention of a pop music video which highlights the artists talent. Close up camera shots are going to be used throughout the performance element of the music video showing the artist playing the guitar. This is significant as it shows the artist be ordinary and extraordinary, therefore our music video will conform to Dyer's Star theory.

How is your settings and iconography conventional to your music genre?
A convention of a pop music video is that through the narrative, context is shown to give the audience a better understanding of the lyrics. One theory in particular that suggests this is Goodwin's theory. He believed that a music video should show a correlation between the lyrics and the visuals. Therefore through various flashbacks our locations will show a contrast between when the couple were happy and in love to when they were playing each other. Connotations and symbolism of the iconography is conventional to the music genre as it gives the audience a better understanding of the song and the emotions felt by the artist. Therefore the settings and iconography that is going to be used in our music video is conventional to the music genre as they conform to generic pop conventions.

How does it build a relationship with your target audience?
Mise-en-scene elements such as location and iconography are effective in allowing the audience to build up a relationship with the artist. The scene in the dark room allows the audience to focus on the artist and his talent as it consists of low key lighting. Close up camera shots will be used to show the artists facial expressions conveying the emotions felt by the lyrics to the audience. Therefore they are able to relate to these feeling and build up a relationship. Close up camera shots also focuses the audiences attention on the artists talent which also grips the audiences attention.

Research into chosen music genre

Research into chosen music genre

The song that we decided to create our music video for is 'impossible' by James Arthur. This falls under the pop genre in which I am going to research. As a group we all come to the conclusion that this is the best music genre to create a video for as we all have an interest in this genre of music and felt we could all come up with creative ideas to create the music video. Pop is one of the most listen to music genre as it consists of the most recent, popular artist such as Rihanna, Katy Perry, Pink etc. This genre therefore attracts a mainstream target audience.

One convention of a pop music video is that there is some form of narrative, in which the artist is perceived to be 'normal'. Therefore everyday people are able to relate to the video attracting a wider ranged audience. This is a technique we are considering using when filming our music video. Other artists of this genre consist of Demi Lovato and James Morrison.

One of the pop music videos I am going to analyse is Demi Lovato's song 'Give your heart a break'. I have decided to choose this song as it is a perfect example of a conventional pop music video. It conforms to the generic pop codes and conventions which is effective in allowing the audience to build a relationship with the artist.

Demi Lovato - Give your heart a break

At the beginning of the music video an establishing shot is used to introduce the artist to the target audience. Demi Lovato is seen to be sitting down on the phone wearing a black dress, with a jacket and boots. This represents the artist as an ordinary person, enabling the audience to relate to her. This is conventional of the pop genre to portray the artist as an 'ordinary' person as it allows the audience to have a build a relationship with the artist. Her representation is shown through her clothing as she is seen to be stylish, therefore her fans are likely to view her as a fashion icon and dress in a similar way. Demi is also seen to be performing on her own rather than having other dancers around her performing some form of dance routine. This represents the artist's independence in which she promotes to her audience.

Mise-en-scene is used in the music video as one of the locations used  is of Demi's house. Difference camera shots are used to show her removing photos of her ex boyfriend from different rooms on the house. One scene in particular is a close up to show her taking the photo off the fridge in the kitchen. This iconography helps creates realism with in the music video and allows the audience to relate to the narrative. This location effective as it highlights that the style of the video is both narrative and performance based. The pictures allow the audience to see the relationship at the beginning and highlight that they were happy and by her taking it down, reflects the end of the relationship. The is also conventional to the pop genre and most songs are of a broken relationship which is shown through a build up throughout the video.

Close up camera shots are continually used throughout the music video. This is so that it allows the audience to focus on only the artist. It creates a focal point on the artists talent and allows the performance to show of the artists emotions relating to the song. The close up camera shots shows the artists facial expressions allowing the audience to see the artists passion enabling them to build up a relationship with them. This also relates to Goodwin's theory as he suggests that the record label demands close ups in order to promote the artist and focus the attention on them. The main editing style in the music video is slow paced. Camera shots alternate usually on the most predominant beats of the song. The editing pace is parallel to the beat of the music in order to create a continual flow throughout the video.

The target audience is aimed at teenagers and young adults who are currently in a bad relationship or are going through a break up. Characters in the music video including the artist are of this age group and so people of the same age would be able to relate to the message of the song. However it could also be said that her target audience also includes younger aged children and he previous work featured her in Disney movies. She was seen as a role model to younger children and so she has fans of a range of ages.

There is further evidence of Goodwin's theory as the music video shows some genre characteristics. Music videos that belong to the pop music genre usually show some form of performance and narrative based. This is evident in Demi's music video as the style of the music video was mainly perfomance and narrative based. This is shown when she performs in various scenes throughout the video, whilst telling a narrative how she has broken up with her boyfriend. It is also conventional for pop artist to be seen in mainstream trendy clothing; this is also evident in the music video. It is also conventional for music videos to seen to be quite bright and light hearted as it attracts a younger fun target audience. This is shown in the flashbacks of her and her boyfriend when they were happy, however a contrast is shown in the performance as low key lighting is used. This represents the sadness and anger of the artist towards the relationship. Therefore the music video conforms to the generic codes and conventions of a pop music video.

Another pop music video that I am going to analyse is James Morrison's song 'Broken strings'.

James Morrison 'Broken Strings'

In the music video, the artist is represented as an 'ordinary' person. This is shown through mise-en-scene i.e. how the artists is dressed. A long shot camera angle was used to show James Morrison to be wearing casual clothing that consisted of a shirt and jeans. Therefore the audience view him as a 'normal' person.  This relates back to Dyer's Star Theory as he suggested that artists are made to be 'ordinary'. This appeals to the target audience as they are able to relate to the artist and the song and are more likely to watch the video. He is also represented as 'Extraordinary' as he is shown to be playing the guitar whilst singing. This portrays the artists talent showing a contrast, as it makes him stand out from everyone else. This in turn conforms to the stereotypical conventions of a pop music videos.

Mise-en-scene is a significant feature in this particular music video. Through out the music video, various elements of iconography is seen to smash in slow motion. This refers back to Goodwin's theory as it shows intertextual references. One scene in particular is the when the artist's guitar smashes to pieces. This is effective as the smashed guitar connotes the breakdown of the relationship. Another element seen to smash in the glass vase holding the flowers. The glass could represent the artist's relationships symbolizing the vulnerability, and he is left broken now that the couple are no longer together. A further mise-en-scene element is significant in the music video is the positioning of the artist. James Morrison is regularly shown to be positioned in the center of the room. An example of this is when he is sitting on the bed playing the guitar. A mid shot shows him positioned in the center making him to be the focal point to the audience in turn connoting the artists importance.

Shallow focus was used in the music video when the second artist is introduced. This is effective as it enlightens the audience as to whats going on in the narrative. Nelly is shown to be the James' girlfriend in which they just broke up.This editing style is effective as it connotes to the target audience that she in no longer there. Green screen has also been used in the music video when the room appears to be on fire. This further connotes the emotions of the artist, such as the anger and pain that was caused from the relationship. This also showed a link between the lyrics and visuals just like Goodwin suggested as it was shown when the artist sings 'But were running through the fire...' This is effective as it allows the audience to get a better understanding on the messages of the song highlighting that they are trying to save their relationship even though it cannot be saved.

The target audience for the music video is aimed at young teenagers to adults who are fans of the music genre pop. This is because it follows codes and conventions i.e. the style of the music video. Most pop music videos show a performance and narrative  to portray the message of the message of the lyrics. This is conventional to the pop genre as a narrative is usually shown on a heart break.

The style of the music video mainly consists of a performance based. This is because the artist is shown to be singing throughout the video even when acting out the narrative. Features such as location all contribute to the performance as the video consisted of one simplistic room. This was used through out the video making the audience focus more on the artist. Genre characteristics were shown in the music video as the artist was shown playing the guitar. This highlights to the audience his talent which is conventional within a pop music video.

Summary
This research is going to assist me when planning my own music video as I have developed a better understanding of the codes and conventions of the pop music genre. Genre characteristics used in both videos such as performances, narratives, fashionable clothes are all elements that I would like to use in my music video. This is because not only because it would make my music video conventional, but I think it would be effective in attracting a target audience who are particularly interested in this music genre. I am also going to use plenty of close up camera shots in order to promote the artist and enable our target audience to build up a relationship with him. Close ups of the artists guitar will be shown when he is seen to be performing reflecting on his talent.

Target Audience Research - Vox Pops

Target Audience Research - Vox Pops

As a group, we created a Vox Pop video which consists of a number of interviews we carried out when completing target audience research. We asked the general public a variety of open and close questions and collected both qualitative and quantitative data. When interviewing the people, we asked them each question off of the questionnaire we had previously designed. These consisted of questions such as what style of music video do you prefer to watch, or what do you expect to see in a music video. One thing we learned is that the majority of the public would rather watch a music video that conforms to the conventions of the genre as they are able to relate to the narrative, rather than the video be diverse. This was useful as it gave us a better understanding of what is expected to see in a music video and how we could use this information to improve our ideas for our own music video. We filmed us interviewing 4 girls and two boys, therefore this shows that our results are not gender bias and can be applied to both genders. This further increased the accuracy of our findings as it can be applied to a wider ranged audience. We then used Final cut to put together a vox pop video as shown below.

The vox pop will assist me when it comes to planning my music video as I am going to consider the public's response to the questionnaire and alter our ideas for my music video in order for it to be a successful as possible. One thing I am going to consider is using conventional iconography and locations of a pop music video.

Target Audience Research - Evaluation & Sub Culture Theory

Target Audience Research - Evaluation Sub Culture

What is the purpose of a target audience?
A target audience is a significant element that a music video is aimed at in order to guarantee its success. A target audience is a specific group of people who the music video is aimed at. These people are usually of a certain age group who all commonly enjoy a certain music genre. The purpose of the target audience is to create fans of a artist. These fans watch the artists music video increasing their popularity, encouraging them to invest in the artists music. Without a target audience there is no one specific to aim the artist at, and therefore they wouldn't get as many people watching their music videos and buying their album. Different target audiences expect to see different codes and conventions in different music genres. We are able to catch a certain target audience attention by including these codes and conventions in the music videos.

What types of research did you carry out and why?
To gain a better understanding of our target audience we carried out some research. One element of research we conducted was questionnaires. As a group we designed both open and closed questions in order to gain a better understanding of what the target audience prefers to see in a pop music video. We wanted to find out whether the target audience would prefer the music video to be conventional or diverse, what their favourite music genre was, and their opinions on our chosen artist. Through the data that we collected we were able to import this information into pie charts and through some consideration, make improvements to our ideas for our music video.

Further research was done to gain an even better understanding of our target audience. We then went onto, as a group create Vox Pops using the questionnaire we had previously designed. We interviewed a variety of people asking them the same questions. This was effective as we found that the close questions no longer restricted their answers and we were able to collect more qualitative data.

How many people did you survey and why?
As a group we collectively interviewed 40 people of a variety of age groups. We did this through distributing the roles between each member of the group. Jagoda took on the responsibility of asking the interviewees questions whilst Dipika filmed them. I had the responsibility of giving them questions to ask each individual. We decided to interview this amount of people as we felt that it would be a good number of people to get a variety of answers. Our findings are more likely to be accurate as it can be applied to a larger population.

Were the vox pops successful and how will you with planning your music video?
The vox pops were successful as we got valuable information about our target audience and what they expect to see in a music video. This information will be beneficial when it comes to making our own music video as we will be able to apply this knowledge to improve our work. We have gained a more specific idea of the codes and conventions the target audiences expect to see in the pop music video which we are going to incorporate in our video. These codes and conventions consist of elements of symbolism such as fire.It is crucial that we use this information when creating our own music video as it will help ensure the success of our music video.

Pick 3 different questions and discuss the results that you received. Explain how your results will assist you and your group with planning the music video.
When researching the target audience, through the questionnaires and interviews we asked 'What is your favourite music genre?'. We decided to ask this as we felt that it was important to know what the most popular music genre is. Therefore we could pick a song from this genre and guarantee the largest target audience. Our data concluded that Pop and Indie were the most popular music genres. This was effective as the artist we had chosen was James Arthur, a pop artist. This therefore shows that we would have a target audience that would be likely to watch our music video. Depending on the findings, we would have considered the answers and altered our genre if pop wasn't the popular choice. This is because we wouldn't have a large target audience which in turn wouldn't guarantee the success of our music video.

Another question we asked was 'what type of music video would you prefer to see: conventional or diverse?' This was asked as we wanted to see what type of artists the audiences would rather watch. For example artists such as Lady Gaga subvert conventions of the pop genre to make her stand out and be different. Artists such as Ed Sheeran conform to the codes and conventions of the music videos however still have a large fan base. The findings we collected showed that they would rather watch a music video that was conventional. This is going to assist us when making our music video as we are going to follow the typical codes of conventions of a pop music genre in order to attract the target audience. If the findings had shown that a diverse music video would have been the preferred choice, we would then had to consider subverting the codes and conventions of the pop music genre in order to make the music video and artist stand out from the rest.

We also went on to ask 'What is your favourite single?' by our chosen artist. The reasoning as to why we asked this question was because we wanted to get an idea of how well our artist is known. The artist is consisted to be 'new' as he is only just releasing his first album following from him winning a talent show 'The X Factor'. If the audience was aware of who the artist was, we wanted to know how many songs did they know. Our finding went on to show that the most favourite song choice was 'impossible'. We found this information beneficial as this is our chosen song choice that we had decided to create a music video for. These results therefore show that our song choice is popular and well know reinforcing the idea that the target audience is likely to watch the video.

Were there any answers that you had to reconsider and why?
The questions we asked all displayed the results in which we thought they would. For example we had a idea that pop was one of the most popular music genres and so we chose an artist that was from the pop genre. Therefore when the results showed this, we didn't have to reconsider our chosen artist. We also felt that the narrative and performance are both popular element that the audience would prefer to see as they are generic conventions of a pop music video.

Sub Cultures
A youth sub culture can be identified as a group of people who are united through common value and tastes such as clothes, music, politics etc. It can also be considered a group of people who are positioned outside the mainstream; people who go against what is seen to be popular.

One of the theories that I looked at was proposed by Grant McCracken. He suggested that post-modern world is full of diversity, dynamism and creativity. He said that if we look at the array of values and ideologies then we can't say all sub cultures come from one culture.

A second theory that I looked at was proposed by CCCS. This theory completely ignores McCracken's views of diversity, Dynamism and Creativity. Instead it suggests that all sub cultures come from one sub culture and that differerent sub cultures are due to the mainstream.

A final theory that I looked at was proposed by Hebdige. He came to the conclusion that although some people think that sub cultures only appear to be different but deep down they are the same. He suggested that if you look deeper, there is enough richness to warrant renaming 'sub cultures' to 'little cultures'.

The genre of music that we have chosen to create a music video is pop. Therefore the theory that bests supports our video would be McCracken. This is because our music video is going to be diverse. Through editing and mise-en-scene elements we are going to make our video creative which coincides with McCrackens theory.

Target Audience Research - Pie Charts

Target Audience Research - Pie Charts

Through doing research into our target audience, we interviewed a variety of 40 different people using a questionnaire that we created. As a group we then decided to display our data on pie charts. This is because we felt that they are effective in showing a contrast in our answers that the target audience selected. This is our groups pie charts:

When creating our questionnaire, we made sure that we considered both male and females so therefore our findings are no way gender bias. This in turn means that our findings can be generalised to the wider population. Our finding display a true representation by considering both genders within our questionnaire results and therefore they are likely to be more accurate.

When completing our questionnaire we considered a wider range of different aged audience ranging from the age of 14- 26+. This therefore makes our finding reliable as they can be applied to a wider ranged audience. The majority of the people we gave the questionnaire to was people aged 17-19. This is because these people were readily available as they were at school.

We decided to research the most popular genre of music as we would consider using a artist of the genre. This would be because we want to make our music video as successful as we can, therefore there would be a larger target audience that would watch our video. Luckily, the most liked music genre was identified as pop which coincides with our artist James Arthur. Therefore we decided to stick to our chosen music artist.

As shown in the pie chart, the most amount of music videos watched on average per week is estimated around 11-15.

When creating the questionnaire, we asked what was the preferred music video aspect: performance, narrative or concept based. This is vital information that we wanted to find as it would influence the style of the music video that we would create. As shown in the pie chart, performance and narrative are the more popular aspects of the music video and therefore we decided to used these element. This is also a convention of the pop music genre therefore our style of music video would be conventional. As a group we decided that 70% of our video will consist of a narrative based and 30% will be performance based.

One question we asked was what music video would you prefer to watch, a diverse or conventional one. The pie chart shows that a conventional music video is more popular as the audience are able to relate to the narrative more than a diverse music video, therefore in our music video we are going to conform to stereotypical pop conventions.

The majority of the people we interviewed said that they have heard of our chosen artist. This is useful as it confirms that our artist is well known, and therefore  the music video is likely to appeal to a large majority of people.

The pie chart suggests that the preferred editing style is slow paced. This is because it creates a easy going music video that has a continuous flow. Therefore this will be considered when it comes to editing our music video.

Those who stated that they knew the artist, we then asked what was their favourite single. The majority of the people said their favourite was 'impossible' as it was his most established song. Therefore as a group we are confident that this is the more appropriate song choice as it would appeal to a large audience.

This researched has helped me when it comes to planning our music video as it has given me a better understanding of what the audience expects to see in a music video. I am going to consider the finding when creating our music video by conforming to the pop conventions, and using slow pace editing. We have also decided to use 70% narrative and 30% performance which is something that the audience preferred to see.

Target Audience Research - Questionnaires

Target audience research - Questionnaire

Questionnaires are an effective ways of researching the target audience and getting a better understanding of what they expect to see in a music video of a certain genre. It highlights the target audience's opinions of our chosen artist and helps us see what codes and conventions are most popular. We are therefore able to take the findings into consideration and apply them to our music video. We then know that this is a music video that is aimed at a certain target audience that would like to watch it. Questionnaires consist of two types of questions: open and closed. Open questions are useful in collecting qualitative data whereas close questions are useful in collecting quantitative data. As a group we created a questionnaire using both types of questions. We asked 40 different people questions we felt would find beneficial in helping us understand what the target audience expects to see. These questions consisted of:

1)What is your gender:
Male

As a group we all went round interviewing available people asking them the questions above. We surveyed 40 people of all different ages as we would get a wide range of findings. It also helped us identify the age group that most particularly enjoys listening to James Arthur. More specificly we were able to get an understanding of what age groups prefer to see in music videos.   When creating the questionnaire, Jagoda and Dipika worked in a pair and designed our questions whilst myself and Jamie created the pie charts using our findings we collected.
